Liz Truss resigns as UK Prime Minister - after 45 days in office. 

 

She announces this at a press conference in Downing Street. 

 

Barely a day after Liz Truss stood in the British House of Commons and said "I'm a fighter, not a quitter", she announced her resignation as Prime Minister of Great Britain on Thursday. 

 

At a lightning press conference in Downing Street, she began her speech by pointing out that she took office at a time of great economic and international instability. 

 

She also addressed Britain's families, saying she is aware of the concerns many households now have about not being able to pay their bills. 

 

- I was elected with a mandate to change that, and we delivered on electricity bills and on cutting the national insurance system, says Truss and continues: 

 

- Given the situation, I cannot deliver on the mandate for which I was elected, and I have therefore spoken to the king and announced that I am resigning, says Liz Truss.

Liz Truss's 45 days is a record 

 

The Prime Minister has recently faced harsh criticism from his party for having wanted to implement a debt-financed tax relief package for high-income earners, among others, at a time of rising household prices and high inflation. 

 

In a YouGov poll released earlier this week of 530 Tories, 55 per cent said they wanted Truss to resign. 

 

A new Prime Minister will be elected within a week and in the meantime Truss will remain in office. Tory MPs rallied throughout the day in a call for Truss to resign. 

 

Truss took office as the new Prime Minister of Great Britain on 6 September. She thus sat for 45 days and thus becomes the person who has held the position of Prime Minister for the shortest time in Great Britain.
