Everest legends warn: Too many climbers on the mountain
Nepalese mountain guide Kami Rita Sherpa is urging authorities to limit the number of climbers allowed to climb Mount Everest, writes the AP.
The statement comes a couple of days after the number of climbers who reached the summit in one day broke a new record.
– It was very crowded this year compared to last year, says Kami Rita Sherpa, who is the person who has climbed the mountain the most times – a full 32.
This is not the first time that there have been alarms about the crowding on the way to the summit of Mount Everest. Criticism has also been directed at allowing too inexperienced climbers to climb the mountain, which increases the risk of serious accidents and deaths.
New Everest record – 274 climbers reach the summit
274 climbers reached the summit of Mount Everest from the mountain’s south side on Wednesday – almost 50 more than the previous record for the number of climbers in a single day. CNN reports.
Favorable weather and strong winds threatening later this week made the number so high. The large number is also due to this year’s season starting later than usual, as a large block of ice blocked parts of the route.
The total has been higher in other years, but then the north side has also been included. This year, China has chosen not to issue any permits for that route.
