Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of the Spanish capital Madrid on Saturday, calling for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to resign.

According to organizers, around 120,000 people took part in the demonstrations, while local authorities estimated the number at around 40,000.

The background is the corruption allegations involving people close to the Spanish Prime Minister. Begoña Gómez, Pedro Sánchez's wife, is formally accused of several corruption crimes. In addition, Pedro Sánchez's brother David is the subject of a corruption indictment.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has repeatedly dismissed the charges against his wife and brother as politically motivated.

In addition, former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos, who has also been a close aide to the prime minister, is awaiting sentencing in another corruption case.
