Chinese balloon over the USA
Trump's staff unaware of "spy balloons" over the US
Donald Trump's staff was never told that balloons suspected of belonging to China were hovering over the US during Trump's time in power. This is what Keith Kellogg, who was then part of the National Security Council, told the political site The Hill.
According to Kellogg, any such balloons were never discussed. If that were the case, the White House would have taken "immediate action" and if Trump was not informed, it would be a "dereliction of duty," he says.

French protests intensify - wildcat strike halts flights
Close to a million French people took to the streets again on Saturday to protest against the proposal to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64, French media write.
In Paris alone, close to 100,000 vented their dissatisfaction, many of whom went on wild strike – including a group of air traffic controllers, which resulted in canceled flights.
Olivier Mateu, at one of the trade unions, states that the protests will continue until they get results.
- The idea is that we will hold out until the reform is withdrawn.
The global challenges
Warmer weather threatens classic British apples
Warmer winters as a result of climate change could mean that apple varieties currently grown in the UK are replaced by varieties grown in New Zealand and Japan, The Guardian reports.
Researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens are currently growing 40 apple plants of varying varieties, where they will investigate which are best suited to the changing climate.
Several varieties need around 1,000 "cold hours" during the winter months when they store energy for spring. The ideal temperature is between 0 and 6 degrees, and at temperatures higher than that, the energy stores are forced to be used. This in turn leads to fewer apples.
