The attack was caught on film – from a doorbell

The samurai's attack was caught on the bell

Here, the samurai goes on the attack in London.

Cameras in the area captured the act of madness in which a 14-year-old boy was killed.

- It is traumatizing. I can't stop thinking about the boy's face, says James Fernando.

A 14-year-old boy died and five others were injured when a man armed with a samurai sword went on the attack after a car crash in Hainault, on the outskirts of London.

For 22 chaotic minutes, the man, who is wearing a yellow hoodie, runs around the area and injures people with the sword.

A video from the scene shows the ambulance arriving to try to help an injured person on the ground, before the paramedics are chased away by the man with the samurai sword.

- He ran around with the sword even when the police arrived at the scene and were looking for victims, says 39-year-old James Fernando, who lives in the area, to the BBC.

The police finally managed to call the perpetrator. The dramatic intervention was caught on a camera from a doorbell.

- Drop the sword, the police shouted before firing a stun gun at the man, who fell to the ground.

"Pulled samurai sword out of pants"

The police do not know what prompted the attack. The perpetrator is being treated in hospital and has not been interviewed.

- We will continue to investigate this, says police officer Louisa Rolfe to the BBC.

James Fernando witnessed the act of insanity in his residential area. He says the perpetrator took the cell phone from a neighbor to hear who was on the other end of the call.

- She understood that something was not right and started running. Then he pulled a samurai sword out of his pants.

He then saw how the perpetrator attacked the 14-year-old boy who, according to the British press, was on his way to school.

- It is traumatizing. I can't stop thinking about the boy's face, says James Fernando.

The Rwandan asylum plans
Britain has sent first migrant to Rwanda

Britain has sent the first asylum seeker to Rwanda, Sky News and The Telegraph report.

The person has voluntarily accepted to be sent to the African country after having his asylum application rejected. The person left the UK on Monday on a commercial flight and was given a £3,000 relocation allowance.

- The Tories are so desperate to get the flights started before the election that they are paying people to go, says Labor politician Yvette Cooper to Sky News.

The controversial bill was passed a week ago. The law means that people who have entered the UK illegally must be sent to Rwanda and that their asylum examination must be carried out there.

Police fire tear gas at protesters in Georgia

Masked riot police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters in Georgia on Tuesday evening, reports AFP. Several demonstrators have also been beaten and arrested by the police.

Thousands of people have demonstrated in recent weeks against a new law intended to stop what the government calls foreign influence and foreign agents.

Critics believe the law is a copy of a Russian law that forces media and organizations to register if they receive more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad. In Russia, the law is used to persecute regime critics and journalists.

Somewhat quietly, the Western world is heading towards a serious hangover in an important part of Africa.

The US withdraws its troops from Niger. Ejected by the new military junta.

The former colonial power France is also forced to withdraw from countries in the Sahel region.

Countries that may soon become new terror strongholds and where Russia and China are advancing their positions.

Quick version
For the past ten years, parts of the Western world have invested heavily in stopping the progress of violent Islamism in the Sahel, the part of Africa that lies immediately south of North Africa and runs from Senegal in the west to Eritrea in the east.

France sent several thousand troops to Mali, at the request of the local rulers, to prevent groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State from overthrowing the civilian government.

The UN sent a peacekeeping force where Sweden also contributed soldiers for a number of years.

The US built a military base in Niger six years ago after reaching a security agreement with the country's then leader. The task of the American troops was to promote the work against terrorism.

But even if these operations were to some extent a military success, they did not contribute to improving the economic conditions in a very poor part of the world where many young people lack work. At the same time, the Sahel is the area in the world where population growth is the fastest.

Large numbers of unemployed young men are a perfect breeding ground for movements looking to recruit suicide bombers and militiamen into their terror armies.

Add to that the fact that the civil government in these countries has often been very weak and fragile.

Russians welcome

Military coups have since 2020 been carried out in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Guinea. The coup plotters have exploited anti-colonial sentiments directed primarily against France.

Moods fueled by disinformation campaigns from above all Russia but also from China.

Therefore, it did not come as a great surprise when the US recently announced that it agrees to the new military junta's demand to dismantle its military base in Niger and withdraw its approximately one thousand soldiers from the country. In practice, you had no choice.

The US retreat comes at the same time as Russian military has been welcomed into Niger to train the army on an air defense system the country bought from Russia.

The Russian soldiers belong to the new Russian Afrika Korps, a successor to the Wagner group, which established itself in many African countries by offering armed protection to the local rulers in exchange for mining rights.

China is trying more to buy influence. The military junta in Niger recently announced that China paid just over four billion kroner in advance for oil from the Agadem field.

That former colonies try to find partners other than their old colonial powers is perhaps not surprising.

Antidote

The USA and the rest of the Western world have tried to find an antidote but so far have not succeeded. Probably because the West only had two goals with its efforts, to counter terrorism and stop migration from the area to the West. Very little has gone into trying to improve the economic and social conditions in the countries.

Something that led to the population kicking back.

The military juntas prefer to cooperate with great powers such as China and Russia, which do not make any difficult demands on human rights and democracy.

But can't we just turn our backs on these countries and let them fend for themselves as they please?

The problem is that developments in this part of the world can have a major impact on our own future.

Islam is the main religion in most countries. They are already infiltrated to some extent by al-Qaeda, the Islamic State and other terrorist movements. As the West loses its influence and watchful eye in these countries, they can easily develop into new terrorist strongholds, even if the military says they are fighting the militant Islamist groups. The strongholds that in the future can be used to plan acts of terror in the West as happened during the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan and the ISIS-ruled caliphate in Syria and Iraq.

With Niger, the EU had an agreement to stop migrants from getting on to Europe. That agreement no longer applies, which could result in increased migrant flows.

Threatened to invade

The military dictatorships also risk undermining the development towards democracy in this part of the world.

One small glimmer of light was that Senegal recently held a democratic election in which the incumbent president lost but orderly handed over power to his challenger. Something that is unfortunately a rarity in Africa.

The region's own institutions have tried to force the military junta to return power to the civilian rulers.

The West African Cooperation Organization Ecowas threatened to invade Niger with a military force to topple the junta. But the threat was never carried out.

Instead, the area continues to sink deeper into instability that could backfire on the West later on.

According to the Global Terrorist Index, the Sahel region accounted for about half of all terror-related deaths last year.

It does not

Singing, cheering and children's laughter filled the castle grounds as the king celebrated his 78th birthday.

Estelle, Oscar, Alexander, Gabriel and Julian were given time off from school to congratulate the king.

- It's nice to see the grandchildren gathered to celebrate the king. I really think he appreciates it, says court expert Sara Ericsson.

There was a full line-up at the Royal Palace today. The Queen, the Crown Princess Family and the Prince Family were there to congratulate the King on his birthday.

The very smallest members of the royal family stole the show time and time again. The new balcony is so large that all adults and children can fit, previously you had to squeeze in a window.

Prinsessan Estelle,12, Prince Oscar, 8, Prince Alexander, 8, Prince Gabriel, 6, and Prince Julian, 3, had been allowed to skip today's lessons to join the castle.

- Next year, all the grandchildren will probably be together because Princess Madeleine is planning a move to Sweden, says Sara Ericsson.

Hela kungafamiljen var på plats och slottets nya balkong var full av barn och barnbarn.

Made funny faces and waved

Little Prince Julian made funny faces at all the people gathered below. He helped as his older brothers happily waved down to Grandpa.

The bands of the navy and the army courted with music and the king received the high guard from Jämtland's Fältjägarkår. Then it was time for all the children to hand over flowers to the king.

It is a popular activity and a soldier from the life guard lent a helping hand when the very little ones needed some guidance towards the birthday child.

The king is celebrated with a private dinner tonight.

The G7 countries promise to phase out coal power by 2035

The G7 countries agree to have phased out coal as an energy source by 2035, AFP reports. France's Christophe Bechu, minister responsible for the green transition, says the decision shows that the countries are ready to live up to what was promised at the COP28 climate summit last year.

However, the agreement contains a proviso that countries can follow an alternative timetable if it means that it is still possible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.

According to information to Reuters, the writing is included to wink Japan and Germany, two G7 countries that are still heavily dependent on coal power.

Denmark close to reaching its climate goals by 2030

Denmark is close to reaching its goal of successfully reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent by 2030. This is shown by a new compilation from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Research, according to Danish TV2.

According to the compilation, current policies will lead to a 68 percent reduction compared to 1990.

Climate Minister Lars Aagaard, Moderate Party, is satisfied. He says that the reduction in emissions is a result of ambitious agreements and broad political responsibility in combination with increased knowledge about emissions.

Swedish fuel policy contributes to Danish emission reductions

The fact that Sweden lowered its fuel taxes is pointed out as a reason why Denmark is in a much better position this year in terms of reaching its climate goal by 2030 than last year, reports DR. The Swedish policy means that more trucks refuel with diesel on the Swedish side of the Öresund Bridge.

Other "free reductions" that the Danish government can count on are two research reports that state that the carbon dioxide emissions from low-lying lands are less than previous assessments have claimed, and that the forests absorb more carbon dioxide when fewer trees are felled than estimated.

However, the biggest reduction comes from changes in the energy sector. On the other hand, the changes in the transport sector and above all in the agricultural sector are slower.

Timo Vornanen was denied a seat next to the girls at the karaoke bar, according to witnesses.

After a wrestling match, he took out his gun and fired a shot into the ground.

- He said that you shouldn't ask about his profession, one of the girls told Helsingin Sanomat.

True Finn and Member of Parliament Timo Vornanen is on sick leave after the shooting outside the karaoke bar in central Helsinki.

At the same time, the party leader Riikka Purra has announced that she has no confidence in him anymore.

The Helsinki police are tight-lipped about what caused the derailment. But now three eyewitnesses are telling Helsingin Sanomat.

According to the newspaper, a chatty Vornanen spent the evening with two women, 18 and 19 years old respectively.

He offered drinks and "acted very flattering" before he became drunk and silent, one of the women said.

"Started fighting to sit next to us"

Towards four o'clock in the morning, Vornanen returned to the women, but was stopped by another man when he tried to sit down. Then it derailed.

- The men started fighting to sit next to us. They both screamed at each other, "hell, don't come here".

When the staff threatened to throw the men out, the fight broke up and they sat down at a table and discussed.

Suspected of three crimes

The fight then continued outside the premises where Vornanen, who also works as a police officer, according to information in the Finnish media, picked up a gun and fired a shot into the ground.

- The suspect has said that he felt threatened at the time of the shooting. And for that reason he used the weapon, says the preliminary investigation leader Jukka Larkio to Hufvudstadsbladet.

It wasn't until the following day that the women realized that the man they were spending time with was a member of parliament for the True Finns.(Sannfinländarna)

- He said that they should not ask about his profession in order to judge him, says one woman.

The police have now started an investigation against Vornanen regarding causing danger, unlawful threats and firearm offences.

Finnair pauses all flights to Estonian Tartu after GPS interference.

The Baltic countries rage and warn of an air disaster.

- It is a threat to our people and our security, says Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.

Last week, two Finnair planes on their way to Tartu in Estonia were forced to turn around and go back to Helsinki after GPS interference.

On Monday, the airline announced that it is pausing all flights to Tartu for a month to allow the airport time to prepare new, safe approach methods that do not require a GPS signal.

- We apologize for the inconvenience the suspension causes our customers. Flight safety is always our top priority, and as the approach to Tartu currently requires a GPS signal, we cannot fly there in the event of GPS interference, says Jari Paajanen, Finnair's Director of Operations.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna rages against the GPS interference in the area and says they risk leading to an aviation disaster.

- We consider what is happening with GPSs in the area as part of Russia's hostile activities, and we will definitely discuss it with our allies, he tells the Financial Times.

Experts tell the Financial Times that the sources behind the disturbances are in Russian Kaliningrad.

- We take these incidents seriously. Our relevant institutions are in contact with colleagues in other countries, says Foreign Minister Baiba Braže.

The Kremlin has not responded to the allegations.
