Expert on the volcanic eruption: "Can last a long time"
People are asked to keep a safe distance from the volcano Litli-Hrútur after yesterday's eruption in Iceland, TT reports. Everyone living on the affected peninsula of Reykjanes and in the capital Reykjavik is asked to close windows and vents due to gas pollution. Despite the advice, several Icelandic media reports that people have made it to the area to look at the volcano.
- It won't be big, but it can last a long time, says Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson, professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland to the public service company RÚV.
He also says that the lava coming from the volcano has decreased in strength since the beginning of the eruption. When the outbreak is over, however, cannot be said.

22 people died – five companies risk millions in fines
The
trial started today against the five companies that are considered to
have contributed to the death of 22 people in the 2019 volcanic eruption
in New Zealand, writes Reuters. When the volcano erupted, 47 people were on site, several of whom survived with severe burns.
"They
were not given the opportunity to make an informed decision about
whether they wanted to take the risk of visiting an active and
unpredictable volcano that had erupted as recently as 2016," prosecutor
Kristy McDonald said as the trial began Tuesday.
The
prosecutor believes that the family business that has owned the island
has failed to assess the risks and to provide suitable protective
equipment.
The five companies that are indicted risk fines of SEK 10 million each
