Violent riot at German festival - police injured  

 

22 police officers have been injured during riots in connection with a festival in German Giessen, reports Tagesshau. A spokesperson for the police says that stone and bottle throwing, fights and smoke bombs were encountered, to which the police responded with pepper spray and batons. 

 

- There were clear indications that protesters intentionally wanted to have violent clashes with the police, says a local authority spokesperson according to Bild. 

 

According to the police, 60 people have been arrested. It is unclear if anyone besides the policemen was injured and if it is festival visitors or counter-demonstrators who are behind the violence.

Volcanic eruptions appear to be underway in Iceland  

 

The volcano Fagradalsfjall in Iceland is about to erupt, writes the Norwegian Dagbladet with reference to the Icelandic newspaper Visir. The eruption is judged to be only a few days away, volcano expert Thorvaldur Thordarson assesses.  

 

The volcano is four miles from Reykjavik and an eruption could have major consequences for air traffic.

The US has destroyed the world's last stockpile of chemical weapons 

The world's last registered chemical weapon has now been rendered harmless. This after the US destroyed its last rockets with sarin gas on Friday, several media outlets write. A milestone, according to the OPCW, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. 

The United States is the last of the countries that have signed the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to complete destruction.  

- Today I am proud to announce that the United States has safely destroyed the last of the munitions in its only remaining stockpile, bringing us one step closer to a world free of the horrors of chemical weapons, President Joe Biden said in a statement.  

At the same time, several countries, including Myanmar and Russia, are suspected of having secret stockpiles of chemical weapons.
