An unusual summer storm hit the Netherlands on Wednesday. In several parts of the country, train traffic has stopped and over 400 flights have been canceled at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam.

Several people have been injured by falling trees and in the city of Haarlem a woman has died when a tree fell on a car, according to the Dutch police.

Winds of up to 145 kilometers per hour have been measured, according to Reuters.

A red warning has been issued in the region of North Holland, where Amsterdam is located. Poly is described as the worst summer storm ever in the Netherlands.

Summer storms are generally less severe than those that occur during the winter, but can still do a lot of damage.

- Since there is no frost on the ground, strong winds are not needed for trees to topple, for example, says Markus Mäntykannas, meteorologist at Foreca.

Can beat Skåne tonight

Storm Poly hit the Netherlands on Wednesday but is now moving north. During the night it can reach the southwestern coast of Skåne.

- Right now Poly is hitting the Netherlands, but it also affects certain parts of Denmark and Germany. In Sweden, it will only be able to have a greater impact on Skåne, says Markus Mäntykannas.

Even if the storm appears to lose strength before it reaches Sweden, there is a risk that Skåne could be affected.

- There can be winds of up to 20 meters per second, then trees can topple over. The storm may cause some damage, but nowhere near that in the Netherlands, says Markus Mäntykannas.

Local showers and thunder may also occur, but towards evening the storm moves further up the country.

- Then it moves towards the regions south of Stockholm, but it will calm down towards the evening.
