The US-China relationship
Yellen has landed in Beijing - will pour oil on the waves
On Thursday, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen landed in Beijing for a four-day visit, where she is scheduled to meet several dignitaries within the Chinese government. The visit takes place in the midst of increased tensions between the US and China - and Yellen's mission will be to try to thaw the frosty relationship, several media outlets note.
Andrew Sheng at the Hong Kong University's Asia Global Institute tells CNBC that China and the US are now trying to draw up a "strategic space" on each side within which the two great powers can move.
- This will be very good for the rest of the world.
The fact that Yellen even spends four days in Beijing – despite her busy schedule and everything else going on – also speaks volumes, says Wendy Cutler of the Asia Society Policy Institute.
- It underlines the importance she attaches to this visit, she tells AFP.

"China cannot swallow all the poison pills and keep smiling"
It is hardly anyone who expects any major breakthroughs on important issues during the US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's visit to China, notes several media.
According to Reuters, both sides have accepted that national security interests have been prioritized over the economic relationship.
- I would not say that Janet Yellen is not welcome, but China cannot just swallow all the poison pills and keep smiling, Wang Huiyao, chairman of the Beijing-based think tank Center for China and Globalisation, told the news agency.
