State of emergency in New Caledonia: "Unwavering response"
France declares a state of emergency in New Caledonia, AFP reports. French President Emmanuel Macron held a crisis meeting with the National Security Council earlier in the day and now announces that any further violence will be met with an "unwavering" response.
The announcement comes after large protests against a decision by the National Assembly in France to change voting rules on the island group. Three people have died and hundreds have been injured during the riots.

Macron in crisis meeting after riots in New Caledonia
After the violent riots in New Caledonia, French President Emmanuel Macron calls a crisis meeting with the National Security Council, French BFM TV reports. According to AFP, Macron is therefore also canceling a planned trip to Normandy.
Several people have died and hundreds have been injured following protests on the island group. The background to the unrest is a decision by the National Assembly in France to change the voting rules in New Caledonia.
