The swelling middle class and increasingly high-tech industry demand more electricity, and at the same time half of it must be fossil-free. It has contributed to the large expansion of solar power, the cheapest and fastest option.
The large purchases of land for solar power, however, have an uneven financial impact. Some make good money renting out their land, while small landowners and former agricultural laborers struggle to make ends meet.

India now the world's third largest producer of solar power
India has become the world's third largest producer of solar power after China and the United States. This is according to statistics from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), writes Asia Financial.
The largest share of electricity production expansion between January and March was solar power, 62.1 percent, followed by wind power, 8.4 percent.
Like China, however, India is simultaneously continuing to expand its coal power, which still dominates the total energy supply – 70 percent by 2023, compared to six percent for solar power.
