Colombian government suspends talks with ELN guerrillas
The Colombian government is suspending peace talks with the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas, the country's President Gustavo Petro announced. The announcement comes after about 30 people died in violence in the northeastern parts of the country, on the border with neighboring Venezuela.
Governor William Villamizar said ELN rebels clashed with forces from the Farc group, with which the Colombian government signed an agreement in 2016.
"What the ELN did in the Catatumbo region is war crimes. Talks with the group have been stopped because the ELN shows no willingness to make peace," the president wrote on X.
Correspondent: A worse situation than in many years
Further violence is expected in the Colombian border region of Catatumbo in the coming weeks, says Al Jazeera's correspondent Alessandro Rampietti, on the ground in Colombia.
He said the level of violence reported in the region was the worst in years. In the past week, 30 people have been killed and more than 70 families have been displaced from their homes.
