Tariffs of 20 percent on goods from the EU.

And 25 percent on all foreign vehicles.

That's Donald Trump's announcement on "Liberation Day".

- We don't want a trade war, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

So this was it - what US President Donald Trump calls "Liberation Day".

Shortly after 10 pm Swedish time, Trump came out to the White House Rose Garden to present his large tariff package.

One of the most important days in the country's history, says Trump.

– This is the day we start making America rich again.

He announces that “reciprocal” retaliatory tariffs will be imposed on countries around the world. They will lead to jobs and factories coming back to the United States.

Trump read out the percentages of the different countries from a large placard he was carrying.

– If they complain, if you want zero tariffs, build your goods here in America.

He announces that 20 percent tariffs will be imposed on goods from the EU – which includes Sweden.

In total, tariffs will be imposed on more than 70 countries. For China, there will be tariffs of 34 percent, Japan 24 percent and the United Kingdom 10 percent.

The EU will respond

He also confirms that tariffs of 25 percent will be imposed on foreign cars from midnight.

– Taxpayers have been fooled for over 50 years. But now it's over, says Trump.

Basic tariffs of ten percent against all countries will come into effect on April 5. After that, the specific tariffs against different countries will come into effect on April 9, according to the White House.

The EU and other countries have previously warned that they will respond with their own tariffs.

Kristersson: Do not want a trade war

After Trump's announcement, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson posted a video on X.

He says in it that he regrets that the US has embarked on a path where it wants to restrict trade through increased tariffs.

– We do not want a trade war. It would make our populations poorer and the world more dangerous in the long run, he says.

His hope is that Sweden will be able to limit the tariffs that the US has presented through negotiations.

– Sweden will continue to stand up for free trade and international cooperation.

Dousa (M): Unfair – baseless

Foreign Trade Minister Benjamin Dousa (M) writes in a comment to Aftonbladet that the US is “greatly escalating the situation”.

“The figures reported are completely baseless, our average tariffs differ by a few per thousand, not by tens of percent. The tariffs are therefore unfair. Europe wants negotiations, but is ready to respond in a very clear way”, writes Dousa.

He further writes that the US is abandoning the trading system they have helped build.

“The government will work tirelessly to reverse the trend. New free trade agreements, where we completely remove tariffs, are on the table with several countries”

The world held its breath ahead of tonight’s announcement. The Stockholm Stock Exchange fell heavily. The New York Stock Exchange also opened in the red, but share prices later rose and closed in the red.

After the tariff announcements, Wall Street turned down in after-hours trading.
