Climate Threat Global Challenges

Unique Visa Gives Hope to Residents of Endangered Island Nation

From this week, residents of the small Pacific nation of Tuvalu can apply for a special climate visa in Australia, reports The Guardian.

The island is believed to be one of the first countries to become uninhabitable due to rising sea levels, and the unique climate agreement signed in 2023 recognizes that the country is particularly vulnerable to climate change.

Tuvalu consists of nine coral islands and rising sea levels mean that they are getting smaller over time.

13-year-old Tekafa Piliota dreams of becoming a doctor. One day he hopes to be one of the 280 people who have their applications approved each year, so that he can study in Australia.

– It may feel hard to leave, but at the same time it is a good decision.

UN Rapporteur: Criminalize Lies from the Fossil Fuel Industry

Disinformation about climate change is a growing problem, the expert panel International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) believes, after reviewing 300 studies on the subject, writes The Guardian.

Among several examples, false claims are mentioned that the major power outage in Spain this spring was caused by renewable energy. The fossil fuel industry is singled out as an actor behind what the panel calls “climate denial”.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change wants disinformation from the fossil fuel industry to be criminalized, and communication researcher Klaus Jensen believes that the inaccuracies are slowing down solutions.

– Unfortunately, I think that the actors who spread disinformation are still very active – and right now they probably have the upper hand.
