Political situation in Belarus

Opposition leader released: “Everyone must be released”

Belarusian opposition politician and former presidential candidate Sergei Tikhanovsky has been released from prison. His wife Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who took over the role of opposition leader and has been working in exile, has published a clip on X in which they hug each other.

Without elaborating, she thanks Donald Trump and allies in Europe for their “efforts”.

“We are not done. 1,150 political prisoners are still behind bars. Everyone must be released”.

Sergei Tikhanovsky was sentenced to 18 years in prison in December 2021, after challenging and gathering a large protest movement against dictator Aleksandr Lukashenko in 2020.

Swedish woman released from Belarusian prison – Kristersson thanks Trump

Swedish citizen Halina Krasnyanskaya has been released from a Belarusian prison, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) confirms in a post on X. She was released along with 13 other prisoners on Saturday.

She was sentenced to five years in prison last year for “participation in the creation of an armed movement on foreign territory,” which according to Aftonbladet could mean that she donated money to non-profit groups or supported Ukraine financially.

The US is said to have played a key role in getting Krasnyanskaya released, and in a post, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) thanks President Donald Trump and White House envoy Keith Kellogg.

“The release shows the importance of American involvement in our region,” he writes.

In addition to Krasnyanskaya and five Belarusian citizens, three Poles, two Latvians and an Estonian were released on Saturday.
