Protests against ICE
Immigration police boast: "Picked 31 bodies today"
Job Garcia, 37, was tackled and arrested while filming immigration police ICE during a raid at a Home Depot store in Los Angeles. This is reported by the LA Times.
Garcia was held in custody by ICE for more than an hour without being suspected of any crime. During that time, the officers stood around bragging to each other about how many migrants they had managed to arrest, Garcia said.
“How many bodies did you pick today?” one said. “We picked 31,” “it was a good day today,” the other replied.
“They called them bodies. My blood boiled,” Garcia told the LA Times.
The newspaper has contacted the US Department of Homeland Security, which declined to comment on Garcia’s case.
Vance: Soldiers will stay in Los Angeles
Vice President JD Vance says the nearly 5,000 soldiers sent to Los Angeles will stay, even though the protests they were deployed against have largely subsided over the past week. This is reported by the LA Times.
– Unfortunately, the soldiers and Marines are still an absolutely necessary part of what is going on here because there is concern that it will flare up again.
Donald Trump has received very harsh criticism for the decision to deploy the military against the demonstrations, not least from California's Democratic governor Gavin Newsom.
The conflict with universities
Sources: Harvard’s only way out is a “deal” with Trump
After a long and festering conflict, the Trump administration and Harvard University have begun talks to bury the hatchet, sources told the New York Times.
Harvard has been praised for taking the fight to the administration in its fight against top universities and interference in education. But leaders at the university have recently become increasingly convinced that they have no other choice but to reach an agreement with Trump, sources told the NYT.
In the talks, Harvard presented the steps it had taken to meet the White House's demands.
Donald Trump has accused Harvard and other top universities of being left-wing and anti-Semitic. The conflict reached its climax when the president announced that he wanted to cut off all federal aid to the university and that international students would be banned from the university.
The conflict between Trump and Harvard – this is what happened
- In April 2025, Donald Trump froze several billion dollars in government funding to Harvard after the university refused to comply with new demands from the White House.
- Among other things, the White House demanded changes to Harvard's governance and admissions procedures to combat anti-Semitism, which Harvard rejected, citing its independence.
In May 2025, the Trump administration decided to withdraw Harvard's tax exemption and banned the university from enrolling international students, which led to unrest among students.
- Harvard sued the Trump administration and over a hundred American universities condemned the government's political interference in higher education.
- A federal court temporarily blocked Trump's attempt to bar foreign students from studying at Harvard, dealing a legal setback for the administration.
