The UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, says that several cases of crimes against humanity have taken place in connection with the violence in Congo-Kinshasa. This is reported by UN News.
Both the Rwandan-backed rebel force M23 and the Congolese military have been investigated by the OHCHR, the UN human rights agency. A report states that several of the crimes should be considered war crimes.
Among other things, the M23 has carried out extrajudicial arrests and abductions of civilians. They are also accused of extrajudicial executions.
At the same time, the report accuses the Congolese army – which is suspected of extrajudicial arrests of M23 supporters and executions without trial.
Both parties are also accused of “horrific” sexual violence.
After decades of war – the countries can reach a ceasefire
After a decade-long conflict between Rwanda and Congo-Kinshasa, the two countries are expected to sign a peace agreement on June 27. This is reported by the AP.
In January, the conflict escalated when the rebel force M23 invaded eastern Congo-Kinshasa with the support of 4,000 Rwandan soldiers. Rwanda has long been accused by Congo-Kinshasa of supporting M23.
Since then, millions of people have been displaced from their homes and the UN is investigating several war crimes in the region.
The peace agreement, which has been presented by the two countries and the US State Department, states that they have reached "provisions on respect for territorial integrity and a ban on hostilities".
