Prosecutor who investigated Trump is being investigated for crimes
Federal authorities in the United States have launched an investigation into former special prosecutor Jack Smith, who for a time investigated current President Donald Trump.
The investigation concerns Jack Smith's alleged "illegal political activity".
The independent federal agency Office of Special Counsel confirmed on Saturday that the investigation into Jack Smith has been launched.
Smith has previously – after being appointed by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 – investigated whether and how Donald Trump tried to cling to power during his first term since Democrat Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election.
Two investigations against Trump
Smith led two federal investigations against Trump, one connected to the storming of the Capitol building and one into Trump's handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, after he left the White House.
Both investigations were dropped before going to trial after Trump won the presidential election last November because he would still enjoy immunity as president.
Smith then left his position at the Justice Department in January this year before Trump, who had promised to fire him, took office as president.
Support Biden
Trump and his Republican allies – including Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas – have subsequently, without providing any evidence, accused Smith of violating the ban on certain public officials from engaging in political activity.
On Wednesday, Tom Cotton requested that the Office of Special Counsel investigate Smith on the grounds that he acted as he did to support Joe Biden and his then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
