UN Chief: Impossible to Reach 1.5 Degrees Goal

Exceeding the 1.5 degree goal is “inevitable,” says UN Chief António Guterres, according to AFP.

– One thing is already clear: We will not be able to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees in the coming years, he said in a speech to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva.

He also called on UN countries to introduce a global warning system for natural disasters, adding that no country is spared from the effects of global warming.

Guterres also called for the fight against disinformation about climate change.

Mosquitoes found in Iceland for the first time

Mosquitoes have been discovered in Iceland for the first time, reports The Guardian.

The discovery was made last week when an entomologist found two females and a male of a species that can cope with the Icelandic climate. Until now, Iceland, along with Antarctica, has been one of the few places in the world that has been completely mosquito-free.

The reason that mosquitoes have now been discovered in Iceland is believed to be the increasingly warm climate. The country has warmed four times faster than the rest of the northern hemisphere, writes The Guardian.

As the northern hemisphere warms, more mosquito species have also spread. In the UK, both Egyptian yellow fever mosquitoes and Asian tiger mosquitoes have been found – species that can spread diseases such as dengue fever and yellow fever.
