The Accusations Against AfD: Spying for Russia
Felix Wilow
An increased interest in German infrastructure has aroused suspicions among State Minister Georg Maier.
Now he accuses the AfD party of espionage – on direct orders from the Kremlin.
“Insane suspicions”, says the party.
In the German state of Thuringia, the AfD has made 47 inquiries regarding infrastructure in the past twelve months, according to State Minister for the Interior, Georg Maier. According to him, these mainly concern the police’s IT systems and equipment in the areas of drone technology and defense. Maier also notes an “increasing intensity and depth of detail” for civil protection and the healthcare system.
“We have been observing with increasing concern for some time now that the AfD is abusing its parliamentary right to ask questions in order to specifically investigate our critical infrastructure,” he tells the Handelsblatt newspaper.
He makes harsh accusations against the party and says that there are suspicions that the AfD is actually engaged in espionage on behalf of Russia.
“The impression is almost inevitable that the AfD is working to a list of orders from the Kremlin with its investigations.”
He also says that several AfD politicians have “close contact with authoritarian states,” which he believes should be taken into account when deciding to ban the party, which has been classified as right-wing extremist by the constitutional protection authority. Something that several members of the Bundestag have opened up to, according to Spiegel.
The AfD dismisses the allegations as “insane suspicions.” According to the party, the increasing frequency is due to years of infrastructure deterioration under the ruling parties.
“With our inquiries, we are exposing these abuses in the interest of the citizens,” they tell the newspaper.
