Political situation in Ireland
Third day of protests in Ireland: Right-wing network investigated
24 people were arrested and three police officers were injured during clashes in Dublin last night, reports the Irish Times. It is the third night of demonstrations in a row, which are aimed at an asylum accommodation on the outskirts of the city.
The reason is that one of the people living at the accommodation is accused of a sexual offence against a ten-year-old girl. The 26-year-old suspect appeared in court on Tuesday.
The Irish Independent writes that the police are working on the theory that the protests are well-organized and have set up a special group to investigate connections to far-right online groups.
Politicians in the US held a debate with an AI version of their rival
"This election just gets weirder and weirder," writes Axios about the fight to become lieutenant governor in the US state of Virginia. Republican candidate John Reid debated an AI version of his Democratic opponent Ghazala Hashimi last night.
A suit-clad AI-generated debate host greeted Reid and the AI-generated Hashimi before a 40-minute debate ensued. Reid's campaign, which initiated the move, says the on-screen opponent was trained on Hashimi's campaign platform.
Ghazala Hashimi's staff is critical, saying she did not approve of her image and voice being used in this way. Virginia Democrats are also congratulating the AI version of Hashimi on her "victory in the fake debate."
King Charles and the Pope share historic prayer
King Charles has prayed with Pope Leo during a service in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, British media report. It is the first time since the Reformation 500 years ago, when Henry VIII broke with Rome, that a reigning British or English monarch has prayed publicly with a pope.
As King Charles is also the head of the Church of England, it is the first time ever that a person with that title has prayed with the head of the Catholic Church.
The ceremony was intended as a symbolic gesture to renew ties within the Christian faith, writes The Telegraph.
