Swedish aid

Analysis: The revelation stands out – it’s not pretty

The revelation that the government is giving Somalia’s prime minister increased influence over 100 million kronor in Swedish aid stands out from the previous “scandals” of the mandate period, writes Expressen’s Viktor Barth-Kron in an analysis.

Because even if the opposition believes that the government has made a mistake, they themselves do not agree.

“Using aid as a means to deport convicted criminals is a measure that sums up the political project of the Tidö parties excellently,” writes Barth-Kron.

Aftonbladet’s Oisín Cantwell still thinks that the revelation should chafe Minister for Development Cooperation Benjamin Dousa (M), who represents a government that claims to fight Islamism and anti-Semitism. He calls it “a little surprising” that they have then concluded an agreement with a Hamas-supporting prime minister who calls Jews “the devil’s offspring.”

“Not long ago, it would have been impossible to conduct aid policy in this way. But in today’s climate, the political risks are small. It’s not pretty,” writes Cantwell.

Manchester synagogue attack
Minister booed at vigil for victims: “Shame on you”

British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was met with boos at Friday’s vigil outside the synagogue in Manchester where two people were killed in yesterday’s attack, British media reports.

When he began his speech with “friends,” several laughed ironically.

“Shame on you! You’re embarrassing!” shouts 61-year-old Joanne Lazarus to Lammy, according to the BBC.

Several people tell Bloomberg and Sky News that the Labour government has allowed anti-Semitism to increase. Lammy was also criticized for Britain’s recognition of Palestine.

The attack on the synagogue is being investigated as an act of terrorism, but the motive is still not established.

Middle East crisis  Protests

Italy paralyzed by strike and protests for Gaza

Up to two million people are demonstrating across Italy against Israel's boarding of the Gaza convoy and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's call for the navy to stop its journey, Italian media reports.

In several cities, demonstrators have blocked roads, railways and ports. In Bologna, Milan and Turin, among others, police have fired tear gas and water cannons at demonstrators after they threw stones at the police, according to public service channel Rai.

Schools, healthcare and traffic have been closed after Italy's largest union, CGIL, called a general strike, the daily La Repubblica reports.

Latin American drug trafficking

Hegseth: We have blown up a drug boat and killed four

The US has blown up an alleged drug trafficking ship and killed four crew members on Friday. This is what US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote on X.

"The attack was carried out in international waters just off the coast of Venezuela while the ship was transporting significant quantities of narcotics - on its way to America to poison our people," Hegseth wrote.

It is the fourth US attack in a short period of time on a ship that is claimed to be transporting drugs, writes Reuters. President Donald Trump has claimed this week that the drug cartels are terrorist organizations in armed conflict with the United States, which therefore, according to him, can act against them under the laws of war.

There is so far no independent information about the attack or the ship.
