Israeli Anger at ICJ Ruling: “Shameful”
Israel “categorically rejects” the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) ruling in The Hague on its obligation to facilitate more emergency aid to Gaza, the Israeli Foreign Ministry wrote on X.
“This is yet another politicized attempt to impose political measures on Israel under the guise of ‘international law,’” the statement said.
The Israeli authorities are once again claiming that the UN agency for the Palestinians, Unrwa, is infiltrated by Hamas and that its members participated in the October 7 terror attack.
The ICJ stated in today’s ruling that Israel has not presented sufficient evidence for this, and that Unrwa must also be allowed into Gaza.
ICJ: Israel obliged to let in more emergency aid
As an occupying power, Israel is obliged to facilitate the entry of emergency aid into the Gaza Strip – including from Unrwa, the International Court of Justice in The Hague (ICJ) has ruled, according to news agencies.
The court also ruled that the Palestinians in Gaza do not receive sufficient emergency aid under international law.
According to the ICJ, Israel has also failed to provide sufficient evidence that a significant portion of the UN's Palestine agency Unrwa's staff are Hamas members. The judges also ruled that Israel may not use starvation as a weapon.
The ICJ's ruling is not legally binding, but advisory. However, it is attributed great legal weight and authority, writes TT.
WHO: Health catastrophe in Gaza could last for generations
Gaza is experiencing a health catastrophe that will last for generations to come, warns World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in an interview with BBC Radio 4.
He says a sharp increase in emergency aid is needed to meet the needs of the population. Israel has allowed medical equipment and other aid supplies in since the ceasefire with Hamas came into effect on October 10, but according to the WHO director, this is a smaller increase than expected.
“If you combine the famine with the mental health problems that we are seeing spread rapidly, the situation is a crisis that will affect generations to come,” he says.
