Middle East crisis Reactions

Analysis: It looks like war – the ceasefire is in tatters

It is becoming increasingly difficult to claim that there is a ceasefire in Gaza. This is what the BBC's Frank Gardner says in an analysis following Sunday's developments, when Israel carried out new airstrikes after accusing Hamas of shelling earlier in the day.

It is worrying for all residents who thought the war was over, he says.

- Today it really looks like war.

Gardner points out, however, that it is "entirely possible" that mediator countries such as Egypt and Qatar can persuade both sides to calm the situation.

SVT's Middle East correspondent Gilda Hamidi-Nia notes that both sides accuse each other of violating the ceasefire, and says that the first phase of the agreement was early described as fragile.

- Now we see how fragile it actually is.

Sky News' Adam Parson says that an American delegation is expected to travel to Jerusalem early next week.

– The president (Trump ed. note) is clearly concerned that a ceasefire, which clearly bears his name, has begun to shake after just one week.

Expert: “Serious crisis but the ceasefire is not over”

The reports that Israel has carried out airstrikes in southern Gaza in response to Hamas attacks are not surprising. This is what political scientist and Middle East expert Isabelle Schierenbeck tells Sveriges Radio Ekot.

– All analysts have been uniformly convinced that this is a difficult phase and that sooner or later we will see problems with implementing the first phase.

Schierenbeck, who is a professor at the University of Gothenburg, says that it is too early to say whether today's events will lead to continued attacks between the parties.

Middle East expert Anders Persson tells Expressen that the situation is a “serious crisis for the ceasefire”. However, he notes that neither party has said that the ceasefire is over.

– We will potentially see similar events in the future, without necessarily breaking the ceasefire completely.
