The tariff crisis  Trump's tariff policy
Analysis: Long-term China is taking advantage of a chaotic US

Donald Trump is leaving major turmoil at home – military tensions with South America, trade spats with Canada, criticism of the White House demolition, a government shutdown – behind him to test his negotiating skills in Asia. This is what Katie Rogers and Erica L Green write in the New York Times.

The trip is full of ceremonial elements, but also negotiations that will have consequences for the global economy – much depends on Trump and Xi's first meeting since 2019, they continue.

"US allies in Asia are being squeezed hard by Trump's tariffs, and Beijing, Washington's most powerful economic rival, shows no signs of giving in to the escalating trade war."

While the US government is shut down, China has just developed a new five-year plan. The meeting with Trump gives Xi a chance to boast about the authoritarian country's ability to implement long-term projects, and contrast it with its rival the United States, writes Simone McCarthy for CNN.

Chinese newspapers are feasting on the political turmoil in the United States - certainly nothing unusual for the propaganda machine, she continues, adding:

"But it also reflects the thinking of the ruling Communist Party - and leader Xi - at a time when the countries are competing in tech and trade and trying to figure out how to structure their economic relationship and rivalry."

The political situation in Argentina
Argentina prepares for a crucial mid-term election

On Sunday, Argentina goes to a mid-term election that will be crucial for President Javier Miel's ability to continue to push his radical reform agenda during the second half of his term, writes AFP.

Miel's party has less than 15 percent of the seats in Congress, which he hopes to increase to at least 33 percent to more easily fend off opposition attempts to stop his drastic cuts in public spending.

– You can’t fix a hundred years of decay in 20 months, he says.

However, the president has fallen in public opinion and his allies suffered a stinging loss in the important local elections in Buenos Aires province in September, so his prospects are bleak.

Donald Trump, a devoted Milei supporter, has threatened to withdraw large sums of aid to Argentina if not enough people vote for Milei.

NATO’s future
Stoltenberg: Putin can count – will not attack NATO

Former NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says in an interview with SvD that he currently sees no immediate danger of Russia attacking a NATO country.

– It’s not because Putin is nice, but because he can count. He sees our military strength, against theirs, and then he understands that it’s not going to work, says Stoltenberg.

In the interview, Stoltenberg talks about his time as head of the military alliance, a time that came to be marked by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He says that for a period of time every night he was prepared to be woken up by a phone call telling him that a nuclear attack was underway.

The future of the Democrats
Harris: Maybe running for president again

Kamala Harris is considering running for president in 2028, she says in an interview with the BBC. She emphasizes that she has not decided, but that she still sees a future in politics.

– I am not done. My entire career has been in public service, it is in my spine, says the former vice president.

In terms of odds, Harris is far from the favorite – even actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is ahead. In response, she says that she has never cared about opinion polls.

Harris adds that she is convinced that today’s younger generations will see a woman in the White House in their lifetime.
