Election Tuesday in the USA

The gubernatorial election in Virginia tests Trump's popularity

Among the elections taking place in the USA today, the gubernatorial election in Virginia is one of the most high-profile, writes AP. The election is between conservative Republican Winsome Earle-Sears and Democrat Abigail Spanberger, who belongs to the party's center-left wing.

The election is seen as an indicator of President Donald Trump's popularity and both parties view the election as a test balloon for which strategy they will choose in next year's midterm elections.

Both would make history as the first women to hold the governor's office in the state. Earle-Sears also has the opportunity to become the first black female governor of any state.

Thousands of questions on the table as the USA heads to Election Tuesday

The mayoral election in New York has received a lot of attention in advance. But the election is far from the only one taking place in the USA on Tuesday - a total of nearly 10,000 votes are being cast around the country, writes TT.

California voters will vote on a controversial redistricting measure in favor of Democrats. The proposal was proposed in response to a similar Republican maneuver in Texas and appears to be getting the green light from voters.

In Maine, residents are voting on a new requirement for photo ID cards in connection with elections, and in Texas, the election is about whether you have to prove you are a US citizen in order to vote.

New Jersey and Virginia are to elect new governors, and in a few more cities besides New York, mayors are being elected.

Trump backs Cuomo – snubs Republican

US President Donald Trump has made his choice in the hot mayoral election in New York. In a post on Truth Social, he urges residents to vote for Andrew Cuomo – not for his partymate Curtis Sliwa.

According to Trump, Cuomo is the only one who can stop a victory for Zohran Mamdani.

“A vote for Curtis Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani. You have no choice, whether you like Cuomo or not. You have to vote for him and hope he does a good job,” the president wrote.

Trump said in an interview with “60 Minutes” on Sunday that he is considering cutting off state aid to New York if Mamdani wins.
