Mexican president molested in public
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was molested by a man while she was out meeting residents near the presidential palace in the capital Mexico City, several media outlets report. The incident, in which a man embraces the president and tries to kiss her, was caught on film.
The man was arrested and the incident has been reported to the police.
“If I don’t report it, what will happen to all the other women in our country?” she says, according to the BBC.
According to The Guardian, women’s rights groups believe that the incident, and the fact that it is the president who is being victimized, shows that a strong macho culture prevails in the country.

Female politicians and activists in Mexico condemn Wednesday’s incident in which a man groped President Claudia Sheinbaum in public and tried to kiss her, writes The Guardian.
Feminist activist and artist María Antonieta De la Rosa says it was humiliating to watch the clip, and opposition politician Patricia Mercado says the president was subjected to something that Mexican women are subjected to “on the street, in public and at work.”
Sheinbaum’s party colleague Laura Itzel Castillo says the man, who was arrested on Wednesday, insulted the president.
“It is sexual assault and must be considered a serious crime throughout the country.”
President wants to see new system for reporting
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is proposing reforms after an unknown man groped her on the street in the capital Mexico City. During a press conference on Thursday, she said that an effective and fair system for reporting harassment is needed.
Sheinbaum did not give any details about how such a system could be designed and has no plans to strengthen her personal protection.
– We have to be close to the people.
According to AFP, harassment against women in Mexico is so widespread that special subway cars have been introduced that are only for women.
