Budget crisis in the USA
Trump defies court – blackmails Democrats with food stamps
There will be no distribution of food stamps to the needy in the USA until Democrats agree to end the government shutdown. This was stated by President Donald Trump on Tuesday, in defiance of a court ruling that at least parts of the food aid must be distributed, American media reports.
In a post on Truth Social, he writes that the food aid will be given "only when the radical left Democrats open the government", according to CBS. The shutdown, which has lasted 35 days so far, will be the longest in the country's history if it continues.
42 million Americans, about one eighth of the citizens, receive food stamps through the program. The US government has been shut down since October 1 due to a blocked budget, according to TT.
Election Tuesday in the USA
California's vote on electoral districts could put a stop to Trump
In one of today's local elections in the US, California is voting on redistricting the state. The proposal, which is predicted to win a majority, is the most politically charged and far-reaching in a generation, writes Politico.
It could give Democrats several new seats in Congress in the midterm elections next year, and possibly crack the Republican majority that allows President Donald Trump to push through his reforms.
Through small adjustments to the electoral districts, Republican voters are clustered in fewer districts while Democratic voters are spread out over more. In this way, Democrats can take more of the state's mandates.
The proposal to redistrict was voted through by the state Senate in August, immediately after a similar Republican maneuver in Texas at the urging of Trump.
