A shooting drama has taken place at a university in Michigan in the United States.

Three people have died and at least five people are injured.

After a long police chase, it is now confirmed that the perpetrator shot himself to death.

- This has been a nightmare. We are relieved that there is no longer an active threat to the school, says a local police officer.

The shooting at Michigan State University in East Lansing began shortly before 02.30, Swedish time.

The local police state on Twitter that several people are injured and that a suspected perpetrator is being hunted. He is described as a "short man wearing a mask".

"Continue to seek shelter where you are. We are still receiving several calls about an active shooter," the police wrote at 4 a.m., Swedish time.

"Run, hide, fight"

The first shots were fired in a building called Berkley Hall, reportedly in a cafeteria. University spokeswoman Emily Guerrant told the Detroit News that one person died there.

Later, new gunfire was reported from several other locations on the large campus area that houses about 15,000 students.

Images on social media show a large police presence at the university. The students have been asked to seek shelter indoors, among other things in a mass mailing via SMS that also said "run, hide, fight".

At a press conference, the police confirm that the shooter is still at large shortly after 05:00 Swedish time. The police also state that the shooter was caught on film and that they will publish the image in the hope of getting help from the public to identify him.

Hundreds of police and emergency services have therefore gathered on the university campus and are going through building by building, so far seven buildings have been declared safe.

The shooter has been confirmed dead

At a press conference at 06:30 Swedish time, the police state that they found the shooter dead outside the school grounds. The man, who is 43 years old, is said to have shot himself.

According to the police, there is no connection between the shooter and the university.

- We have no idea why he came to the school to do this tonight, says a local police officer. He continues:

- This has been a nightmare. We are relieved that there is no longer an active threat to the school. Now is the time to heal. Our hearts are open to those who have been affected or have relatives who have been affected.
