This week's optimism about the debt ceiling has been replaced by silence. Republican negotiators left a meeting at the White House shortly after it began on Friday and no new meetings are scheduled for Saturday. This is reported by Punchbowl News with reference to sources.  

 

President Joe Biden, currently in Hiroshima for the G7 meeting, remains optimistic that a solution will be reached in time. 

 

- I still think we can avoid suspending payments and get something properly done, he told the press late on Friday evening.

Biden downplays risk of state bankruptcy: "No worries"  

 

US President Joe Biden plays down the risk that the infected issue of the country's debt ceiling will not get a solution. This is reported by several international media on Saturday. 

 

- I still believe that we will be able to avoid state bankruptcy, says Biden in connection with this weekend's G7 summit in Hiroshima.  

 

When asked if the president is worried that the Democrats and Republicans will not be able to agree, he answers:  

 

- Not at all.
