ELN goes “house to house” killing alleged enemies
The humanitarian crisis in the Colombian region of Catatumbo is the worst ever, according to Colombia’s civil ombudsman Iris Marín, writes CNN Español.
The ELN guerrillas are going “house to house” killing people who are alleged to have collaborated with breakaway groups from the FARC guerrillas, according to the ombudsman’s office’s survey. They are fighting with the ELN for control of the cocaine trade in the region. Leaders of local organizations and their family members are also among the 60 people who have been murdered.
Schools in the region are closed and agriculture is disrupted, which in turn is leading to food shortages.
Peace talks between the ELN and the government collapsed on Thursday, and on Monday, President Gustavo Petro declared war on the guerrillas.

Petro accuses the ELN of carrying out massacres against civilians and thereby committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, according to Colombian El Espectador. Petro writes on X:
“The ELN has chosen war, and war will be theirs.”
5,000 soldiers have been sent to the area to fight the guerrillas, who until Friday were participating in peace negotiations with the government, writes AFP.
