Political situation in Hungary

Orbán: Leaving ICC because “it has become political”

The reason for Hungary’s decision to leave the International Criminal Court (ICC) is that “it has become political,” the country’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said, according to Reuters.

He said the court’s decision to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shows that this is the case.

At the same time, Netanyahu praised Hungary’s “bold” decision to withdraw from the ICC, which he described as “corrupt.”

Israel: “Hungary takes a strong moral stand”

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said that Hungary and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had taken a “strong moral stand” by deciding to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC). This was reported by AFP. He also criticized the ICC for its “zeal to attack Israel’s right to self-defense.”

Meanwhile, the ICC says Hungary has an obligation to cooperate with the arrest warrant issued for the Israeli prime minister.

Hungary announced on Thursday that it is leaving the International Criminal Court, and Orbán has previously said that the country will not execute the ICC's arrest warrant for Netanyahu.
