Vatican confirms: Pope suffered stroke and heart failure
Pope Francis died of a stroke, according to the death certificate now released by the Vatican.

The Vatican also confirms that the Pope wished to be buried simply in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
"The grave should be in the ground; simple, without special decorations and only the inscription: Francis," the Pope writes in his will that has now become public.

Pope Francis died in his apartment and the process is said to have been rapid, according to Italian media.
The Pope was feeling well when he woke up around six o'clock on Easter Monday. At seven o'clock the Pope's condition deteriorated rapidly and he died of a stroke shortly afterwards, reports Corriere della Sera.
The death notice came at 07.35. The cause of death will be officially confirmed this evening at 20.00.

The upcoming papal election will be a battle between the conservative and progressive wings within the Catholic Church, writes the Daily Telegraph, which has listed a number of possible successors to Francis.
Hungarian Peter Erdo is seen as one of the main favorites if the conclave chooses a more conservative path. On the liberal side, Filipino Luis Antonio Tagle is mentioned as a possible candidate. In that case, he would become the first pope from Asia.
“Five or six years ago he was Francis’ favorite,” Vatican expert Edward Pentin told the newspaper.
Swedish Cardinal Anders Arborelius is not on the newspaper’s list, but was mentioned as one of three main candidates when the French newspaper Le Figaro speculated about Francis’ successor last year.
