The war in Sudan

Peace conference in London: “The world is looking away”

Representatives of the international community are gathering in London today to try to find a path towards peace in Sudan, reports AFP. The conference is taking place exactly two years after the civil war broke out.

– The brutal war in Sudan has destroyed the lives of millions of people, but despite this, large parts of the world continue to look away, says British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

He also presented a new British aid package worth over one and a half billion kronor to Sudan.

In total, foreign ministers from 14 countries are participating in the conference. However, the Sudanese government is not invited, which the Sudanese Foreign Minister has criticized.

Two years of civil war have made Sudan the world's worst crisis center

Two years after the civil war in Sudan broke out, the humanitarian situation in the country is the worst in the world, writes The Guardian. Tens of thousands of people have been killed, hundreds of thousands are threatened with starvation and over 13 million have been forced to flee.

– The situation in Sudan is worse than ever. The worst humanitarian crisis, the worst refugee crisis, the worst hunger crisis, all kinds of negative records are being broken, says Elise Nalbandian from the aid organization Oxfam.

Leni Kinzli, communications director at the UN World Food Program (WFP), says the conflict is not getting the attention it deserves.

– Unfortunately, Sudan is, I don't want to say forgotten, it is ignored, she says.
