Violence in Haiti

Gang storms prison in Haiti – 500 freed

Gang members stormed a prison in the town of Mirebalais in central Haiti on Monday and freed 500 prisoners, reports the BBC.

The gangs already control large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, but the latest attack suggests they are increasingly exerting control over the rest of the country.

At least 5,600 people were killed in gang-related violence in Haiti last year. An international police force sent to the country has so far failed to break the gangs' grip.

Haitians forced to flee neighboring country after attacks

Haitians forced to flee neighboring Dominican Republic after widespread nationalist demonstrations and attacks, writes Haitian Times.

In the border town of Hoyo de Friusa, members of Dominican nationalist organizations have attacked Haitians, their homes and their businesses in border towns during the week. The nationalists believe that Haitians bring crime with them from their crime-ridden homeland, and are demanding mass deportations.

– I am returning to my country because I have heard that the group will continue to attack Haitians in the city, Mackenson Firmin, who until recently lived in Hoyo de Friusa, told the newspaper.

Kenyan police seriously injured in Haiti

Two Kenyan police officers in Haiti have been seriously injured in clashes with gangs in the past week, officers told Reuters.

Kenya first deployed police to Haiti in June last year as part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, which currently has about 1,000 security personnel, about three-quarters of whom are from Kenya.

It aims to restore enough security for Haiti to hold elections in February 2026. But the mission has been called into question due to the uncertain situation with escalating gang violence.
