Thailand's Queen to be buried - for a year

The funeral for Thailand's former Queen Sirikit began today.

Thousands of mourners lined the streets of Bangkok to follow the procession as the queen's remains were carried from the hospital to the royal palace, AFP writes.

There, her body will lie in state for a year before being cremated.

In Thailand, royalty is largely seen as divine, and Queen Sirikit is mourned and celebrated everywhere: on gold-adorned portraits, large billboards and in pop-up ads in Thai banking apps.

The population is urged to wear black or white - colors that represent mourning in Thailand.

Queen Sirikit is the mother of the country's current king, and was the wife of Thailand's longest-serving monarch, King Rama IX, who died in 2016.

Sirikit died on Friday, aged 93.

Notorious militia reportedly gaining ground in disputed city

The RSF paramilitary group claims to have captured the army headquarters in the disputed Sudanese city of al-Fashir, the last city in the Darfur region that has not been controlled so far.

The reports from the war-torn area have not been independently confirmed.

The city of al-Fashir has been under siege for more than 18 months, with terrible consequences for the hundreds of thousands of civilians who remain. The RSF, which is at war with Sudan's regular army, has long tried to capture the city.

Both sides have been accused of serious war crimes.

However, a local militia allied with the army states in a statement that residents are still "resisting terrorist militias."
