President Javier Milei’s party wins the mid-term elections.
He promises to “make Argentina great again”
Among other things, with the billions of dollars promised by Donald Trump.
When more than 95 percent of the votes were counted, ultra-liberal President Javier Milei’s party LLA (La Libertad Avanza) had close to 41 percent.
The opposition Peronist party received just under 32 percent.
Although the result does not give Milei’s party a majority in Congress, it is seen as a decisive victory.
Since Milei won the presidential election in the fall of 2023, he has made significant cuts to the state budget. In his campaign for the presidential election, he often used a chainsaw as a symbol of the drastic reforms.
First important test
He has managed to bring inflation down from more than 200 percent in 2023 to around 30 percent in September. But the cuts in the state budget have hit Argentine households hard.
Sunday's election was the first test of the president's support throughout the country.
The result was stronger than expected, exceeding the expectations of both the government and analysts. Milei has been criticized for his cuts and has also been accused of corruption.
Wink to Trump
But now it was an overjoyed president who took the stage at the party's election vigil at a hotel in the capital Buenos Aires.
- I am the king of a lost world, Milei sang according to The Guardian.
During his victory speech, he promised more reforms.
“Today we have reached a turning point, today the construction of a great Argentina begins,” he told supporters.
He also praised the help promised by US President Donald Trump.
“Now we are focusing on implementing the reforms that Argentina needs to strengthen growth and take the decisive step forward – to make Argentina great again,” the president said.
