Expert: Trump's threat could sink Milei in the election
US President Donald Trump has promised to help Argentina deal with the country's severe and growing currency crisis - but only on condition that President Javier Milei's party wins today's congressional elections. But Benedicte Bull, a researcher at the University of Oslo, tells E24 that she believes Trump's ultimatum could be a sinking for Milei.
- People react negatively to direct threats from Trump. This has been seen in other Latin American countries and Argentines are probably even less inclined to let themselves be governed, she says.
Voter Alan in Buenos Aires, however, tells Ekot's correspondent that he intends to vote for Milei's party.
- I think Milei has done good things so far. Economic policy is more stable, inflation has decreased, he says.
Argentina prepares for decisive mid-term elections
On Sunday, Argentina will go to mid-term elections that will be crucial for President Javier Milei's ability to continue to push his radical reform agenda during the second half of his term, writes AFP.
Milei's party has less than 15 percent of the seats in Congress, which he hopes to increase to at least 33 percent to more easily fend off opposition attempts to stop his drastic cuts in public spending.
- You can't fix a hundred years of decay in 20 months, he says.
However, the president has fallen in public opinion and his allies suffered a stinging loss in the important local elections in Buenos Aires province in September, so his prospects are bleak.
Donald Trump, a devoted Milei supporter, has threatened to withdraw large sums of aid to Argentina if not enough people vote for Milei.
