Milei's party faces victory in Argentina's midterm elections
The ruling party LLA (La Libertad Avanza), led by President Javier Milei, looks set to take home the victory in Sunday's midterm elections in Argentina.
The LLA received almost 41 percent of the vote, while the Peronists became the second largest party with just under 32 percent. At the time of writing, 90 percent of the votes have been counted.
The newspaper La Nación describes it as a landslide victory, while Reuters writes that it is a relief for the libertarian Milei, whose opinion figures have fallen in recent weeks.
In a victory speech, Milei, who is a devoted supporter of Donald Trump, says that the win is an important step in implementing reforms that will "make Argentina great again."
Milei has been president for two years and has made himself known for his radical economic policies. He often uses a chainsaw as a symbol of the reforms he has implemented in the country.
Trump congratulates Milei on victory: “Amazing job”
US President Donald Trump congratulates Javier Milei on his victory in the Argentine midterm elections.
“Congratulations to President Javier Milei on his big victory in Argentina. He is doing a fantastic job! Our confidence in him has been confirmed by the Argentine people,” Trump wrote on his own social media platform Truth Social.
With just over 90 percent of the votes counted, Milei’s party LLA looks set to receive almost 41 percent of the vote. Ahead of the midterm elections, which are the first sharp test of Milei’s policies, Trump promised an aid package to Argentina – assuming the Argentines vote Milei to victory.
