Princess Märtha Louise responds to criticism
The princess and the shaman visit Carina Bergfeldt
Princess Märtha Louise is accused of using her royal title to make money.
Together with the shaman Durek Verrett, she has made Norwegians furious - now she responds to the criticism.
- I hear them and I see them, says the princess in Carina Bergfeldt's program on SVT.
Princess Märtha Louise and her husband Durek Verrett have refused interviews with Norwegian media since their controversial documentary, "Rebel Royals", premiered on Netflix in September.
The criticism against the couple is great. Märtha Louise and Durek are accused of ”selling out the royal house” and using Märtha Louise's title to make money.
In the episode, she is asked about her thoughts on her title.
– There have been so many times when people have wanted me to give up my title. I hear them and I see them and I understand why they say what they say. But at the same time, I have lived through a lot of things like this. It is also important, I think, to listen to what they actually say. And I do. And I take it in, the princess tells SVT.
“Some days I can’t even walk”
Since 2019, King Harald has forbidden his daughter from connecting the title with sales or advertising. Carina Bergfeldt wonders how it feels to no longer use the princess title.
– It’s not that I don’t use the title anymore. I don’t use it in commercial contexts. It’s still my name, explains Märtha Louise.
In the program, the shaman talks about his kidney disease. He receives dialysis three times a week to survive.
– It affects my life in such a way that I have been used to traveling and giving lectures all over the world. It is a challenge because I have to find a place nearby that can give me dialysis so that I can participate. Some days I can't even walk. But I force myself and tell myself that I will go down, or up, those stairs today.
"I cry but it's okay"
Princess Märtha Louise says that it is tough and stressful to deal with Durek's illness. She drives him to dialysis every time.
The couple has had more challenges in their life together. The shaman says that it was tough for him to be a stepfather to Märtha Louise's children when her ex-husband, Ari Behn, took his own life on Christmas 2019.
Märtha Louise gets teary-eyed when she talks about the incident.
- Durek was my rock through everything, she says as Durek grabs her hand.
- It's tough for me to talk about, but it's okay. I cry, but it's okay. To experience it and see three children go through all these emotions... everyone reacts differently when they grieve, says the princess, pointing out that it happened during the pandemic and that it allowed the family to grieve and be together in a good way.
