Senator: Trump plans to brief Congress on land attacks
Donald Trump will brief Congress on possible attacks on Venezuelan soil when he returns from his Asia tour. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham told CBS News.
– I support the idea, but I think Trump already has all the authority he needs, the senator said.
On Sunday, the US warship USS Gravely docked in Trinidad and Tobago off Venezuela. The ship, along with the world's largest aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford, is in the region, where the US military has attacked boats carrying alleged drug smugglers.
In the interview with CBS, Graham was asked if the US also plans to attack land targets.
– Yes, I think it's a real possibility.
Venezuela rages against US exercises in the region
Venezuela rages against the United States after the US warship USS Gravely docked in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday. The ship will remain there until Thursday so that the countries can conduct military exercises in the region, writes AP.
In a statement, President Nicolás Maduro calls the countries' actions a "provocation". The Venezuelan government also claims that it has arrested people with connections to the US intelligence service CIA in the country.
"Venezuela condemns the military provocation from Trinidad and Tobago which, in coordination with the CIA, is trying to provoke a war in the Caribbean," the statement says.
