Slovakia has closed its border with Ukraine, the country's authorities announced, citing "security reasons".

The announcement came before reports of Wednesday's Russian attacks on Ukrainian areas bordering NATO countries.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was the only head of state or government from the EU to travel to Moscow in connection with the celebration of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Russian President Vladimir Putin then promised continued generous deliveries of fossil fuels to Slovakia, which has been exempted from EU sanctions against Russian oil.
