Finnish President Alexander Stubb ran into Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York last week—and delivered a clear message to the Russian official.

Stubb was on his way to a UN Security Council meeting regarding Ukraine when he encountered Lavrov in a corridor.

Russia must end its war; that was the president's message to the foreign minister, according to an email sent to the news agency STT by the Office of the President in Helsinki.

Stubb also told Lavrov that Ukraine is ready for peace negotiations. It is unclear whether he received a response.

The two men are acquainted from Stubb's time as a government minister. Stubb has previously recounted how, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he sent a text message to Lavrov, *Iltalehti* reports:

"Please, Sergey, do something. You are the only one who can stop him."

"Who do you mean? Zelenskyy or Biden?"

"No. You know what I mean."
