Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigns.

The 74-year-old has had enough of the political chaos in the country.

Now a new government crisis awaits.

Mario Draghi was captured on video entering the presidential palace where he later announced his resignation.

The announcement comes after the three coalition parties withdrew their support for him.

- In light of the vote in the Senate last night... I am on my way to the president to announce my intentions, Draghi told the lower house earlier in the morning, according to Reuters.

It is the second time in a short time that the Prime Minister announced that he wanted to leave his post.

After the Five Star Movement's decision to boycott the vote on a new support package last week, the 74-year-old had enough and stormed into President Sergio Matarella. After several hours of negotiations, the president stated that he rejected the resignation.

Now the presidential office confirms that the prime minister is resigning.

Messy time at the post office

Draghi, who was previously head of the European Central Bank, has been in office since the beginning of 2021. He then stepped forward as a safe figure after a very turbulent political period.

Draghi, who himself does not belong to any party, has since led a motley crew of parties from right to left.

"The national unity and the majority that supported this government since it was formed no longer exists," he notes.
