The North Korea crisis
Travis King pretended to go home - then he stabbed
Travis King tricked his military supervisors into getting on a plane back to the U.S. from Seoul, South Korea, according to U.S. officials who spoke to CNN. Instead, he crossed the border into North Korea on Tuesday.
It wasn't until later Tuesday, when King didn't show up at the Fort Bliss military base in Texas, that the US military realized he was missing. South Korea also confirmed to the US that King never boarded the plane.
- He passed through all the security checks until boarding, where he told the airline staff that his passport was missing, says an official. He was then escorted away from the security checkpoint and allowed to go to the demilitarized zone.
According to the UN, King is currently said to be imprisoned in a North Korean detention center.
