Criticism of the hen ban: Contravenes other laws
Argentina's new ban on gender-neutral language and gender perspectives runs counter to existing laws. This is what several experts say to the Telam news agency, which describes a storm of criticism against the ban.
- You deny people the exercise of their citizenship by selecting only those who define themselves as binary, says trans activist and former state secretary Alba Rueda to the news site La Voz.
According to the Gender Identity Act from 2012, residents have the right to be treated according to their perceived gender identity, regardless of legal gender. Since 2021, non-binary "X" is also available as a legal option.
According to a law from 2019, all public employees must be trained about violence against women. Judge Rodrigo Morabito fears that the removed gender perspective will lead to unfair sentences, for example against women who defend themselves against partner violence, he tells Telam.

"He" and gender perspectives are prohibited within the state
By order directly from Argentina's libertarian president Javier Milei, gender-neutral language is banned in all public administration, his spokesperson Manuel Adorni announces. In addition, the gender perspective and all "unnecessary" use of feminine forms of language are prohibited.
In the last four years with a center-left government, a gender perspective and gender-neutral language have been used by the authorities.
A few days ago, the new government also decided to shut down the equivalent of the Discrimination Ombudsman because, according to Adorni, the authority was "completely pointless". Immediately after the election, the Department for Equality was abolished.
