Trump: "Ukraine belongs to Russia"

Donald Trump's views are "essentially identical" to Vladimir Putin's regarding Ukraine.

As president, he was clear that Ukraine must be part of Russia.

This is stated by Trump's former adviser Fiona Hill in a new book.

Quick version
When Donald Trump was president, he "was clear" that "Ukraine must be part of Russia".

It appears in a brand new book that is partly about Trump's time in the White House. The book is written by David Sanger, reporter at the New York Times, and is entitled "”New Cold Wars: China’s Rise, Russia’s Invasion, and America’s Struggle to Defend the West”.

"He thought that Ukraine, and above all Crimea, must be part of Russia," says Trump's former adviser Fiona Hill in the book.

Identical views

Hill was director of European and Russian affairs on the US National Security Council between 2017 and 2019.

"He really couldn't understand that Ukraine was an independent state," says Fiona Hill in the book. This is reported by the newspaper The Guardian, which received a copy of the upcoming book.

Author David Sanger concludes in his book that Trump's views on Ukraine were basically identical to those of Russian President Vladimir Putins.

The war in Ukraine has now entered its third year and now there is full debate in American domestic politics about further support for the country.

It is about $60 billion in new military support from the United States to Ukraine.

Battle in Congress

The decision on the money is currently blocked by right-leaning Republicans in the US House of Representatives, who are acting in accordance with Donald Trump's wishes.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has indicated that he wants to get the support for Ukraine through, but he is facing strong opposition, not least from Trump himself.

President Joe Biden has strongly condemned the Republican blocking of aid to Ukraine. President Biden and other dignitaries have also condemned Trump's statements in support of Putin.

Fiona Hill, who is interviewed in Sanger's new book, appeared in February at a conference organized by conservatives against Donald Trump.

She told the conference, held in Washington DC, that Donald Trump "adores" Vladimir Putin for his "autocratic leadership" and for his long time in power.

Nervous about a possible second period

That opinion, Hill argued, strongly contributed to Trump's rejection of the intelligence community's conclusion about Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.

At the same conference, Fiona Hill also said she had spoken to European leaders at a security conference in Munich.

She said "they were nervously preparing for a possible second Trump administration".

"The prime ministers and presidents and foreign ministers and others all know how capricious Trump is," Hill said, continuing:

- The result of these growing misgivings about Trump, his attitude towards Russia and his other idiosyncrasies is that European leaders have begun to lose faith in the United States. And it's very sad.
