Double tropical smocks against Sweden – Isaac and Kirk on their way

Quick version

• A low pressure with remnants of tropical storm Isaac and former hurricane Kirk is expected to affect Sweden with rain and snow, mainly in northern Norrland, during Sunday and the beginning of next week. It will cause traffic problems with the risk of slippery and slushy roads.
• Friday's weather started hazy but brightened to sunny during the day. The temperature is 10-15 degrees in the south and 3-10 degrees in the north. Meteorological autumn has now established itself in most of the country, while the north has winter and the Götaland coast remains in summer.
• Stable weather in southern Sweden is expected to continue on Saturday, while the northern part may experience increasing cloudiness and snowfall in the mountains. After the weekend, the weather will become more unsettled with more precipitation due to incoming ex-Hurricane Kirk.
  

On Sunday, a low pressure moves towards Sweden with rain and snow.

Remnants of Tropical Storm Isaac are moving in and early next week former Hurricane Kirk is also arriving.

- As it looks now, Kirk can still be quite strong when it arrives, says Lasse Rydqvist, meteorologist at Klart.

Friday morning began with hazy weather in most parts of the country.

But during the day it is expected to break up and the afternoon looks to offer mostly sunny weather - with only light cloud cover.

It has become gradually colder in recent weeks and during the day the temperature ends up at 10-15 degrees in the south and 3-10 degrees in the north.

- Now it is meteorological autumn in almost the entire country, today it is clear! But you can take the opportunity to enjoy the sun during the afternoon when the weather will be fine. If you find shelter, it's a few degrees warmer, says Lasse Rydqvist.

During Saturday, the weather is stable in the southern half of the country. In northern Sweden, we can count on increased cloudiness and eventually rain, which partly turns into snowfall in the mountains.

At night there may be some haze or fog.

- We have three seasons at the same time now in our long country. In the north it is meteorological winter, in most parts of the country meteorological autumn and in the Götaland coast, for example, we still have meteorological summer.

Remnants of tropical storms

During the Sunday hours, we get visitors from the west.

A low pressure pulls in with remnants of Tropical Storm Isaac. It can lead to heavy snowfall in the northern interior.

- Rain and snow will pass east across northern Norrland on Sunday with the risk of slippage, poor visibility and slushy roads. It will above all create problems in traffic, I would say, says Lasse Rydqvist.

It is unclear how much wet snow will be involved. In southern Norrland, rain lingers for an extra long time.

In the southern half of the country, it looks like there will be varied cloudiness and local rain showers.

Cover for unsettled weather

After the weekend, we can expect more unsettled weather.

At the beginning of next week, it is time for the next tropical influence, writes  SMHI.This time from the previous Hurricane Kirk.

Lasse Rydqvist believes that Kirk will affect Sweden at most until next weekend.

- It is actually a category 3 hurricane right now. It can be quite strong when it moves in at least over the British Isles. As the forecast looks right now, it has quite a lot of energy left when it arrives in Sweden as well, he says.

This makes the details of the forecast uncertain, but much points to rain and in the mountains snowfall.
