Half of the Senate wants to see tariffs of 500 percent – unless Putin starts negotiating
Half of the US Senate wants to see punitive tariffs of 500 percent against Russia unless the country starts “negotiating in good faith” for peace in Ukraine. This is what 50 senators from both Republicans and Democrats write in a statement.
“Most in the United States believe that Russia is the aggressor and that this terrible war and Putin’s aggression must end now and be prevented in the future,” the statement says.
The senators also say they share Donald Trump’s frustration with Vladimir Putin, and write that they support his attempts to achieve peace.
Sources: Russian envoy to Washington this week
Top Russian diplomat Kirill Dmitriyev is to visit Washington this week, several sources tell CNN. There he is expected to meet with Donald Trump's envoy Steven Witkoff. The purpose of the meeting is to strengthen the relationship between the countries.
It will be the first visit by a high-ranking Russian representative since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.
According to CNN, the US has temporarily lifted sanctions against Dmitriyev so that he can be granted a visa for the visit.
