Kremlin: Extremely useful meeting with US envoy

The meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US envoy Steve Witkoff was “extremely useful and effective”, the Kremlin said in a statement on Monday, several news agencies reported.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the meeting, which took place in St. Petersburg last week, provided a “much-needed channel” for Putin and US President Donald Trump to exchange information with each other.

However, Witkoff and Putin did not discuss whether the two presidents should meet face to face, Reuters reports.

Russian claim: Attacking only military targets

Russia’s missile attack on the city center of Sumy was aimed at an army meeting, the Russian Defense Ministry claims a day after the attack. Ukraine is also alleged to be using civilians as “human shields”.

“Our military only attacks military and military-related targets,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a press conference.

The attack has so far claimed 34 lives, including two children. However, a medal ceremony for soldiers was planned, according to Artem Semenichin, mayor of Konotop, a city in the region.

Semenichin is highly critical of the commander who planned the ceremony, believing it “helped Russia justify this terrorist attack.”

The information about a planned medal ceremony has been confirmed by sources including Sky News and Ukrainian Pravda.

Poland: Russian attacks a mockery of US goodwill

Vladimir Putin is mocking US goodwill by continuing his attacks on Ukraine at a time when the US has presented a proposal for a ceasefire. This is according to Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorsk, Sky News reports.

He points out that Ukraine agreed to the American proposal a month ago.

“The despicable attacks on Kryvyi Rih and Sumy are Russia’s mocking response,” Sikorsk said in connection with the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg on Monday.

More than 30 people were killed and at least 100 injured in Sunday’s attack on the city of Sumy. US President Donald Trump has previously said that he believes the attack was an accident.
